In Black-Owned, Adams celebrates the living history of Black bookstores. Filled with stories of activism, espionage, violence, community, and perseverance, the book begins with the first Black-owned bookstore, opened by an abolitionist in New York in 1834 and then how they continued to nourish community and activism from the 20th century book stores that were part of the civil rights and Black Power movements, and then becoming targets of FBI surveillance, police scrutiny, and racist vigilantes.
Full of vibrant characters and written with cinematic flair, Black-Owned is a powerful story of community, resistance, and joy.

7:00 PM – Concert Experience
At The Gospel Project, the table comes first. We gather for dinner before moving into an evening of music, storytelling, and shared reflection. Come to one, or come to all!
🔥Featured Artist: Flamy Grant
Flamy Grant blends theatrical flair with deep gospel roots in songs that name what so many have experienced but rarely hear sung aloud. Her debut album Bible Belt Baby reached #1 on the iTunes Christian Music chart and sparked national conversation. Flamy’s work addresses religious trauma, reclaiming spirituality from shame and exclusion while celebrating queer joy, resilience, and love. 🌈🎶
Why This Night Matters
Flamy Grant sings about harm done in the name of faith — and the healing that can follow. She sings about chosen family, spiritual reclamation, forgiveness, laughter, survival, and the holy work of telling the truth.
This is music for anyone who has ever felt pushed out, stayed quiet, or wondered if there might be another way forward.
This is more than a concert.
It’s a shared experience.
A table.
A sanctuary.

Get to Know Us - Newcomer Lunch
Get to know us better! - Come to a relaxed and friendly gathering where we can connect, share stories, and get to know one another over lunch. 🌈
You’ll both hear a little bit about our community at Irvine United Congregational Church and we’ll take some time to share a bit of our faith journeys with one another. At IUCC, we believe that everyone’s story matters. Wherever you may be on your journey of faith—full of questions, certainty, doubt, discovery, or somewhere in between—you are welcome here.
For those who may ultimately be interested in joining the church, we offer three gatherings where you can learn more about IUCC, the United Church of Christ, and what it means to be in covenant together as a congregation. The Newcomer Luncheon is the first of these gatherings.
There’s absolutely NO pressure or expectation. This is simply an opportunity for us to get to know you better and for you to learn more about our community.
For convenience, you are also welcome to attend our smaller, more contemporary worship service at 11:15 AM and then join us immediately afterward for lunch. We would love to begin the day together in worship in the sanctuary before gathering around the table.
Lunch will be provided, and we’re happy to accommodate any dietary needs you may have. Just email Pastor Craig at membership@iucc.org to let us know.
We can’t wait to meet you!

The Last Days of Judas Iscariot: A Courtroom Drama

This spring, The Wayward Artist is proud to co-produce The Last Days of Judas Iscariot alongside The Larking House in a powerful theatrical collaboration that dares to put Judas on trial.
Set in a gritty corner of Purgatory, this darkly funny and deeply provocative courtroom drama reexamines the ultimate betrayal. Saints and sinners take the stand. Mother Teresa testifies. Pontius Pilate defends himself. And at the center of it all is a question that still haunts humanity: Is anyone beyond redemption?
Raw, irreverent, and unexpectedly moving, Stephen Adly Guirgis’ electrifying script crackles with humor and humanity while wrestling honestly with faith, justice, forgiveness, and the limits of divine love. This co-production celebrates bold storytelling and fearless artistic partnership between two companies committed to meaningful, risk-taking theatre.

Stories of Sacred Disability The Gospel Project Worship
Join us for an Inclusive, Artistic, Embodied Worship with Community
✨The Gospel Project presents ✨
Holy Ground: Disabled Voices, Sacred Stories
📆Saturday, February 28, 2026
As part of The Gospel Project, Holy Ground: Disabled Voices, Sacred Stories invites us into an evening shaped by disabled lives, stories, and spiritual insight. This gathering centers voices too often excluded or sidelined in faith spaces, lifting them up as sacred witnesses whose stories deepen and transform how we understand God, community, and ourselves.
🍽️We begin with a shared meal at 5:30pm, followed by the worship gathering at 7:00pm. As always with The Gospel Project, the table comes first. Community is formed through food, conversation, and presence before we move into music, storytelling, scripture, and prayer.
🎶📖We are honored to welcome the return of the Peppermint Ridge Choir, whose music reflects joy, dignity, and deep community, embodying what it looks like when belonging is practiced and every voice is invited to participate fully. The evening will also feature Rev. Erin Beardemphl, whose pastoral and theological work alongside the Peppermint Ridge community invites the Church to listen more carefully to disabled experience as a source of spiritual truth and theological insight.
💃🏼🎭We are also honored to welcome Straight Up Abilities, an inclusive performing arts organization where artists of all abilities learn, create, and perform together. Through dance, theater, and expressive movement, their work centers access, dignity, and joy, reminding us that creativity is a shared language and that the Spirit moves most freely when every body is invited into the dance.
🎤Our keynote speaker, joining us from St. Louis, is Rev. Barbara “Bobbie” Blunt, an itinerant elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and Pastor of Buren Chapel A.M.E. Church in Herculaneum, Missouri. A seasoned pastor, chaplain, and community healer, her ministry bridges pulpit, hospital, and street-level outreach, grounded in embodied care, justice, and the sacred worth of every person.
🎵We are also honored to welcome Marleena Barber, a vocalist, cabaret artist, educator, and disability advocate whose work is shaped by lived experience. Her artistry offers audiences a powerful encounter with creativity, presence, and the sacred textures of disabled life.
🌱Joining the lineup is Helena Donato-Sapp, a young artist, poet, and disability justice advocate whose work centers intersectionality, embodiment, and belonging. Through her creative voice and public witness, Helena challenges ableism and invites communities to listen more deeply to disabled wisdom.
🕯️Through music, testimony, scripture, and theatrical storytelling, the night explores how God is revealed through bodies and minds that move through the world differently. Rather than asking how disability can be cured or overcome, this gathering asks what disabled life reveals about God, belonging, and grace.
🤍This evening affirms a simple truth: every embodied life speaks of God. Difference becomes a teacher without being demanded. Access becomes a spiritual practice rather than an afterthought. Community becomes the place where all are seen, heard, and welcomed at the table.
♿This gathering is planned with accessibility and multiple ways of participation in mind. ASL interpreters and childcare will be available.

Lent is a time for reflection, renewal, and drawing closer to the heart of God—a season not of shame, but of grace; not of scarcity, but of deepening faith. In our progressive Christian community, we embrace this season as an opportunity to listen, to question, and to walk together in love. With open hearts and open minds, we journey to discover where God’s Spirit is leading us next.

Join us on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM in the Peace Room for a time of shared reflection and spiritual practice. At IUCC, we believe in the power of prayer—and we recognize that it looks different for everyone. This group is open to all and offers a space to explore a variety of ways to pray, whether through silence, words, movement, or stillness. Together, we seek a deeper, conscious connection with the Sacred—something greater than ourselves.
No experience necessary. Just come with an open heart.
