  • Irvine United Congregational Church 4915 Alton Parkway Irvine, CA, 92604 United States (map)

Advocates for Peace and Justice is hosting a talk - Empathy and the Law: What Judges Tell Us About Themselves When They Write About Transgender Individuals.

Sunday, June 28th at 12:30 PM in the Peace Room

Featured will be Susan Etta Keller, Professor of Law at Western State College of Law in Tustin, CA.  Our session will last approximately one hour, and we have invited any from University Synagogue who may be interested to join us.  As always, IUCC members and friends are cordially invited to attend.

We will gather in the Peace Room, which is conveniently accessible from the IUCC parking lot.  IUCC is located at 4915 Alton Parkway in Irvine.

Professor Keller’s scholarship focuses on feminist legal theory and issues of gender identity.  Recently, she has published law journal articles about the meaning and effect of language choices in statutes and judicial decisions regarding transgender individuals — work that addresses the recent extensive backlash against transgender rights and the conflicting ways courts handle questions of parental rights.  Susan also writes about these and similar issues for a general audience in her Substack newsletter, Gender, Law, and Language (susan648.substack.com).  She is a graduate of Harvard Law School and is a congregation member at University Synagogue in Irvine.
