 Learning of Origin and Interior – This study serves anyone who has studied the Bible for a long time or is wanting to explore it for the first time.  Join Pastor Paul and Robinmarie as we talk about the origins and construction of this sacred book, as well discuss what’s inside and why it is so important as Progressive Christians to become more literate in our knowledge of the Bible.

January 8 – February 19, 2012, 10:15 – 10:50,
“A Well Worn Path, The Teachings of Jesus.”  Who was Jesus really?  Why has his life impacted our lives so much?  How does learning more about him and discussing it with others impact our own spiritual path and life choices?  We will be using a booklet written by our Pastor Emeritus, Rev. Fred Plumer and viewing clips from LTQ to add to the conversation. Robinmarie facilitating, all are welcome, we meet in Plumer Hall and childcare is provided. 

CLASS ON POVERTY TO BEGIN JANUARY 11   
GOOD NEWS TO THE POOR
is the title of the class to begin Jan. 11 at IUCC in Plumer Hall. It will be offered at both 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays for six weeks. The class will be led by George S Johnson, a retired Lutheran pastor now attending our congregation along with his wife, Vivian. Pre-registrations are appreciated as some material needs to be ordered soon. (See brochure in Sunday's bulletin.) The class will be a Bible study and discussion about the great gap between the rich and the poor and what people of faith should do about this. Johnson is the former Director of the Hunger Program of the Lutheran church (ELCA) and has taught classes in Africa, India and Latin America as well as in US churches on this topic.He can be reached at: georgesjohnson@gmail.com.

The Rev. Canon Mary Moreno Richardson – will speak on Immigration issues from the local level. The Rev. Canon Mary Moreno-Richardson is the Coordinator of Hispanic Ministry at St. Paul’s Cathedral and the first Latina priest ordained in the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego.  She is the creator and director of the Guadalupe Art Program, a spiritual empowerment program for Latina youth using art, dance and music.  She serves as the Chaplain for victims of human trafficking with the ACTION NETWORK.  She is on the National Committee of the Status of Women and has served as a delegate to the United Nations.  She is an advocate for migrant’s rights and also hosts a Spanish language radio program.  She serves as a Chaplain in detention for undocumented youth and victims of human trafficking in San Diego.  In 2009 she received the Uplifting Citizens of San Diego Tribute & Spirit award and the Interfaith Committee for Workers Justice: Voices 4 Justice Award.

Author Jonathan Kirsch will speak on his recent book “The Grand Inquisitor’s Manual: A History Of Terror In the Name of God” Jonathan Kirsch is the author of The Grand Inquisitor’s Manual: A History of Terror in the Name of God, focusing on the Inquisition and how the “inquisitorial toolkit” has been put to use by authoritarian leaders in the past and in our own time, ranging from Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia to the Salem witch trials, the Hollywood blacklist and the war on terror. Kirsch is also a longtime book reviewer for the Los Angeles Times, a guest commentator and broadcaster for NPR affiliates KCRW-FM and KPCC-FM in Southern California, an Adjunct Professor on the faculty of New York University, and an attorney specializing in publishing law and intellectual property in Los Angeles.

Pitzer College Professor Phil Zuckerman will speak on “Goodness and Godlessness”Friday, 5/25, 8:15 p.m. “Shabbat Alive” services at 7:00 p.m.)Professor Zuckerman, who grew up as a Reconstructionist, is a Professor of Sociology and secular studies at Pitzer College in Claremont, CA and the author of a number of books on secularism and its values, including “Atheism And Secularity,” “Faith No More” and “Society Without God.”  He will discuss what we know sociologically about non-religious people and non-religious cultures.  Based on his research among secular people, his thesis will be simple: religious faith is not necessary for a good, healthy society or a good, meaningful life.

If you want a concise description of the series as a whole: “The series describes Jesus in the historical matrix of the first century and his significance today, especially in the matrix of American Christianity."

Friday – February 17, 7:30 pm -Telling the Story Now and the World of Jesus Then.  Ways of telling the story of Jesus in American Christianity today compared to setting his story in the historical matrix of his time and place.

Saturday – February 18, 9:00 am - The Kingdom and the Way.“The kingdom of God” and “the way of the Lord” as the central themes of Jesus’ life, message, activity, and passion in the gospels.

Saturday – February 18, 11:00 am - Good Friday and Easter. Jesus was executed by the powers that ruled his world and raised by God.  What did this mean then?  And what does it mean now?

Saturday – February 18, 2:00 pm -Following Jesus and American Christianity Today.  What does faithfully following Jesus mean for American Christians today?  Is it about believing in Jesus so that we can go to heaven?  Or is it about our transformation and the transformation of this world?

Education is an important component to the core of our ministries here at IUCC. We seek to provide our congregation with education opportunities that are progressive in theory and open to discovery. This is accomplished in several different ways. On Sunday mornings, education is available for both children and adults.

Our Children’s Sunday School is lead by age groups:
