SUNDAY SCHOOL PROGRAM
Education is an important component to the core of our ministries here at IUCC. We seek to provide our congregation with education opportunities that are progressive in theory and open to discovery. This is accomplished in several different ways. On Sunday mornings, education is available for both children and adults.
CHILDREN Children's school is available during our second service. We are currently using the curriculum, Bible quest. Our classes are combined in the following format:
Preschool Kindergarten - 1st Grades 2nd - 3rd Grades 4th - 6th Grades Jr. High - High School
Our teachers are volunteers through our membership. Our Jr. High - High school is taught by our Youth Leader. Our children's and youth school also involves mission and service projects throughout the year. In doing so we are working to provide our children with the full embodiment of not only education in learning about the words in the Bible, the teaching of Jesus and the worlds but also in education them in the importance of helping to serve and help others in need.
Bible Quest emphasizes teaching the overall story of the Bible, developing skilled and faithful interpreters, and inviting all people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ. The activities in each session are carefully tailored to the abilities and interests of the learners. The sessions provide opportunities for visual, musical, artistic, linguistic as well as individual and groupl experiences with the Bible stories.
Bible Quest is an ecumenical project. Nine partners in the development, writing, editing and production of the resources used; including the United Church of Christ. You can learn more about them through www.biblequest.com.
ADULT EDUCATION Our Adult Sunday School is held between services from 10AM - 10:40AM. We are currently using the curriculum from Living the Questions. Living the Questions is a DVD and web-based study exploring beyond the traditions and rote theologies. It has 12 themes ad is ideal for exploration of faith and spiritual formation. One of its goals is to help seekers in discovering the significance of Christianity in the 21st Century and what a meaningful faith can look like in today's world.
Each session will include conversation, sermon clips, lecture excerpts and spiritual exercises for practical application. The DVD series includes many contributors including: Nancy Ammerman, Marcus Borg, Lloyd Geering, John Cobb, Leslie Griffiths, Siyoung Park, John Shelby Spong, Bill Nelson, John Dominic Crossan and several others. Since the overall theme is that of faith as a journey, not a destination, the Living the Questions curriculum offers resources for continued exploration. The ongoing themes will include: Biblical authority, metaphor and how it shapes us, the Jesus/Christ dichotomy and what does faith look like in the 21st Century? You can learn more about them through www.livingthequestions.com.
FAITH EXPLORATION GROUPS The focus of these sessions is to share and discuss our personal understanding of faith and church community. It is an opportunity to spend meaningful time with others and experience the wide and deep range of Christian beliefs.
INQUIRER'S CLASS This informative 2-part class is designed to acquaint individuals with UCC. Part I is an informal time to learn more about our pastors, church history and beliefs, and to share individual faith journeys. Part II reviews our church organizational structure and opportunities for personal involvement and commitment to active church membership.
